Raleigh's Smokey Hollow:
Smokey Hollow was a low lying area between the Seaboard Air Line Yard and the (old) Norfolk Southern Yard. There were a few homes down in this area, then populated by mill and railway workers. It takes its name from the way smoke from the steam locomotives plus the wood and coal stoves used to heat the shotgun houses would lay down in the hollow. There was even a baseball fiels down there called Devereaux Meadow located across Peace Street from Smokey Hollow.
